2003 All African Games silver medallist, Sunny Akapson led Nigeria Customs Service to secure the women’s title at the recently concluded 2024 Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League.

The win was a testament to his unyielding passion, hard work, and dedication to the sport.

Reflecting on his journey, Akapson expressed gratitude; “To God, I give the glory. I thought my volleyball career had ended until the Nigeria Customs Service gave me a platform to continue with the unfinished business”.

Akapson’s relationship with the Nigeria Customs Service volleyball team has been long, stretching over many seasons of highs and lows. His volleyball career began as a player, where he achieved significant success with the male team. He won two seasons of the prestigious Nigeria Volleyball Premier League, but his transition to coaching the female team marked the next chapter of his storied career.

In a competitive season of the Premier League that featured 11 teams, Akapson’s leadership propelled the women’s team to an exceptional record: 22 matches, 21 victories, and one loss. This incredible feat ensured their dominance in the first and final phase of the season.

“We won the first and final phase of this season winning 21 matches losing one game to CNS Spikers in the first phase,” Akapson proudly stated.

Akapson’s success as both a player and coach has been historic. Not only did he win the CGC Volleyball Premier League two times as a player, but he also led the women’s team to two more titles, making it a total of three victories in the Premier League as a coach.

In addition to these remarkable achievements, Akapson also won the prestigious Top 8 Championship, once as a player and once again as a coach. It’s a rare feat that speaks to his extraordinary skill, knowledge, and leadership abilities.

When asked about the key to his success, Akapson was quick to give credit to the values that have guided him throughout his career.

“I give it to hard work, dedication, commitment, and discipline. These principles have not only shaped him as a player but have also been the cornerstone of his coaching philosophy, instilling a winning mentality in the Nigeria Customs Service women’s volleyball team,” he added.
