India have maintained their medal lead at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos with two days left of the competition, www.aclsports.com reports.
The Asian nation has dominated the championships across epee, sabre and foil events, while also adding to their tally in the wheelchair categories to establish a commanding advantage over the rest of the field.
India lead the standings with 17 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals. England are second with two gold, two silver and nine bronze medals, while hosts Nigeria and Cyprus complete the top four.
Hosts Nigeria, who sit third on the medal table, have enjoyed a memorable championship highlighted by a historic gold medal from 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwo-Thompson. The country’s wheelchair fencers have also claimed two silver and eight bronze medals in the discipline’s first appearance in Africa, while Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye added a bronze medal in the men’s sabre.
Cyprus also secured a gold medal despite being represented by a lone athlete, while Australia, South Africa, Northern Ireland and Wales are among the other nations to have reached the podium.
With only the final events left to be contested, India remain firmly on course to finish as the most successful nation at the championships in Lagos.
