Aminat Alabi made history as the first Lagos-based athlete to win the Lagos Women Run, completing the 10km race in 39 minutes, 25 seconds to claim the 2025 edition, www.aclsports.com reports.
The race started at Tafawa Balewa Square and concluded at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena in Onikan. Alabi’s victory earned her N2 million and a place in the history books.
Traditionally dominated by northern runners, the 2025 edition saw 19-year-old Vivian Obadiah of Plateau State finish second in 39 minutes, 55 seconds, while fellow Plateau runner Elizabeth Bawa secured third place in 40 minutes, 41 seconds.
Alabi, a mother and experienced marathon runner, credited her coach for pushing her to success. She admitted she never expected to win but stayed consistent in training, often running late at night and during the day while balancing the demands of raising her two-year-old son.
Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, praised the organisers and highlighted the significance of Alabi’s win. “It’s a decade of building community cohesion, promoting consistent opportunities in sports, in terms of personal development, wellness and opportunity for economic development and leadership. Lagos is actually at the centre of many things that has to do with new innovations and development that’s been manifested consistently in sports and other areas of human endeavours.”
Fatodu added that the victory reflects the wealth of talent across Lagos State. Tayo Popoola, coordinator of the race, emphasised that the event is about connecting women, creating opportunities, and adding value beyond financial rewards.
