Tobi Amusan took silver as Masai Russell won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on Friday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Amusan clocked 12.34s to finish behind Russell, who claimed the title in 12.22s, while the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser took bronze in 12.39s.
The Nigerian produced a strong finish after finding herself outside the top two early in the race, moving through the field to secure second place and a $75,000 prize, while Russell earned $150,000 for winning the event.
Ella Onojuvwevwo, meanwhile, bowed out in the women’s 400m semi-finals after finishing sixth in the opening race in 50.50s.
Marileidy Paulino won the race in 49.58s, with Salwa Eid Naser finishing second in 49.67s and Nickisha Pryce third. Onojuvwevwo’s time placed her 12th overall among the 16 athletes in the semi-finals.
Nigeria had also been due to compete in the mixed 4x100m relay after securing automatic qualification at the World Relays in Botswana, but the team was not included in the final entries and did not compete.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is making its debut in Budapest from September 11–13, with the three-day event featuring the world’s leading athletes and a $10 million prize fund.
