Super Eagles, Falcons to know AFCON opponents this month

Nigeria men and women’s national teams; the Super Eagles and Super Falcons will soon know their opponents in their various stages of upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced date for the draws.

In a release made available to www.aclsports.com, CAF announced dates for the qualifying draws for 2023 AFCON, group stage draws for 2022 Women’s AFCON as well as draws for the qualifiers for the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

After the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Super Eagles will attempt to put all efforts into the qualifying programe of next year’s AFCON which commences this June.

According to CAF, daws for the group stage of the qualifiers will be conducted on April 19, 2022 in Cairo, Egypt, starting from 6:30pm Nigerian time.

For the women, the 2022 Women’s AFCON is scheduled to hold in Morocco in July with twelve teams (including hosts Morocco and defending champions Nigeria) already qualified to participate at the tournament.

Draws for the group stage of the women’s football showpiece will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022 in Morocco. The tournament will also serve as qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Furthermore, date for draws for the qualifying series of next January’s African Nations Championship to be hosted by Algeria was also revealed by the continental ruling body.

The qualifiers will get underway in July to determine the sixteen teams that will travel to Algeria in January. The draws will be conducted on Thursday, April 28 in Cairo.

Nigeria’s home based Super Eagles will be hoping to qualify for the next edition having missed out on the 2021 edition in Cameroon.
