The Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) has selected three players for the 2018 World Championship in Madrid. The Secretary General of KFN, Ahmed Abdullahi told www.aclsports.com that the athletes were selected based on current form and ranking.

He said the 24th World Karate Federation (WKF) Championship would hold from 3rd to 11th November, 2018 in Madrid, Spain.

He gave the names of the athletes to include: National champion Ujunwa Nwankwo (-68kg), National team captain, Efezino Akpotu (-75kg) and Prince Ocholi Ameh (+84kg).

He revealed that the Technical Director, Dave Jegede will lead the delegation to the event.

Abdullahi said the federation was sure that the crop of athletes, with adequate preparations, would return Nigeria to the world medal table at the event.

“In 1996, Nigeria fielded one athlete, Segun Akinola at the World Championship in South Africa; in 2009, we also took one athlete, Maxwell Nwaboze to the World Championship in Japan. I am happy the country is fielding three athletes this time around”.

Also speaking, Technical Director, Dave Jegede revealed that athletes sponsored themselves to the World Championships.

He said the federation is indebted to the World Body and it has stopped them from attending international championships.

“We believe with the support of all and with the right motivation, our athletes will do the nation proud,” he said.
