Matchday five of the Nigeria Women’s Premier League (NWPL) featured an epic battle between FC Robo and Rivers Angels for top spot in Group A of the 2019 league season.

Rivers Angels came into the encounter with a two point lead over second placed FC Robo knowing they needed to avoid a defeat to maintain top spot and keep the Super 4 dream alive.

At the end of the day, the Port-Harcourt based team was able to avoid defeat in Lagos as Blessing Okpe cancelled out Folashade Ijamilusi’s opener to give Rivers Angels a precious away point.
The other game of Group A saw Delta Queens defeat Osun Babes 3-1 in Asaba to go level on points with FC Robo.

With these results Rivers Angels remain top of the group with 10points while FC Robo slip to third with an inferior goal difference to Delta Queens following today’s 3-1 win.

In Group B, Adamawa Queens ensured they stay top with 11points following a crucial a 1-0 win over Heartland Queens in Yola. Edo Queens come just behind them in second place with 10points after Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Dream Star Ladies.

A 1-1 draw between league defending champions Bayelsa Queens and Kaduna Queens in Matchday 5 means the reigning champions remain top pending the result of the other group game between Nasarawa Amazons and Sunshine Queens.

Group D is another tight group where the sole slot for this year’s Super 4 event will go down to the last day of the league as the top three teams will fancy their chances. After Wednesday’s results Ibom Angels have 9points while Confluence Queens follow closely with 8points and Abia Angels with 7points.

At the end of Matchday 6 the top placed teams in all four groups will automatically qualify for this season’s Super 4 tournament to decide the winner of the league.
