Unseeded Sloane Stephens completed a remarkable comeback to tennis from injury to beat her compatriot Madison Keys 6-3 6-0  to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

24 year old Stephens was on top of her game and was completely dominant in the second set.It turned out to be a one sided affair in a game that lasted for 61 minutes .

Keys failed to find her rhythm, and the occasion clearly got to her.

Ranked 957 just last month, Stephens has won 15 of 17 matches. She will be ranked 17 on Monday following her US Open success.

She becomes only the fifth unseeded woman to win a major title in the Open era.

Both women have been close friends since childhood and were making their Grand Slam final debuts.

Stephens becomes the first American woman from outside the Williams family to win a major singles title since Jennifer Capriati at the 2002 Australian Open.

She is also the first American woman whose surname is not Williams in almost 20 years to win at Flushing Meadows. Lindsay Davenport was the last non-Williams sister to win the US Open in 1998.
