Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel has become the first African to be elected President of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, www.aclsports.com reports.
Samuel defeated incumbent Marie-France Dufour 14-6 during the federation’s elective Annual General Meeting at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City, on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The result also makes him the first Nigerian to lead the CFF, ending a period in which the federation’s presidency had been held by representatives from countries including Scotland, Australia and Canada.
His election coincides with Nigeria’s hosting of the senior and veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, with more than 20 nations taking part.
The Championships have also introduced U-23 and Wheelchair Fencing as medal-yielding events for the first time.
Delegates recognised Samuel’s leadership and vision, following his progression from a world-class fencer to President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation.
During his tenure, Nigeria has hosted FIE-sanctioned Junior World Cups and African Championships, while the country is now the first African nation to host the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Samuel’s election marks another milestone for African representation in international sports leadership and Nigerian fencing.
