A first half strike by Esther Ijeoma Okoronkwo was all Nigeria’s Super Falcons needed to edge the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 1-0 in their Paris 2024 Olympics third qualifying round second leg clash in Abuja on Monday, www.aclsports.com reports.

Both teams fought out a 0-0 draw in the first leg clash decided at the Reunification Stadium in Douala on Friday and they knew that the Banyana Banyana of South Africa were waiting to receive the conquerors among these two arch-rivals.

The tie was however rounded off as early as the 15th minute at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja when Okoronkwo tapped home from close range after a brilliant piece of play by Juventus star Jennifer Echegini. The goal meant that Nigeria exacted some revenge on Cameroon who had prevented the Falcons from attending the 2012 London Olympics.

Okoronkwo was one of the two changes that Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum made to the team that started Friday’s game in Douala, she and the assist provider Echegini handed starts in place of Halimatu Ayinde and Asisat Oshoala.

Both players would have made the coach proud as they provided the tie’s decisive moment on the quarter-hour mark with Echegini latching onto a ball behind the Cameroonian defence, beat her maker into the byline before cutting back for Okoronkwo to poke home from three yards.

What is a Nigeria vs Cameroon contest without players unrest? One of such resulted in the sending off of Annie Enganemben after lashing out at Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie for an alleged use of voodoo.

Emerging African women’s football powerhouse South Africa will be Nigeria’s foes in the final round of qualifying after a 4-0 aggregate win over Tanzania. The two-legged tie will be decided in the first week of April 2024.

Super Falcons XI vs Cameroon: Nnadozie; Alozie (Akudo Ogbonna 84′), Ohale, Demehin, Plumptre; Ucheibe, Abiodun, Okoronkwo (Uchenna Kanu 60′); Echegini (Rinsola Babajide 84′), T. Payne (Asisat Oshoala 60′), Rasheedat Ajibade
