Ladies in Sports International (LIS) has launched the Women Tennis Invitational, with the winner set to receive a record ₦4 million in prize money, the highest-ever amount for a domestic women’s tennis tournament in Nigeria, www.aclsports.com reports.
The tournament will take place from 14 to 16 December 2026 at Lagos Country Club, Ikeja GRA, featuring the top eight ranked female tennis players in Nigeria.
LIS also aims to use the competition to promote women’s tennis, improve earning opportunities for female athletes and attract greater private-sector investment into the sport.
Speaking on the initiative, LIS founder Tega Onojaife said Nigerian athletes needed more than talent to build successful professional careers, highlighting the importance of quality competitions, adequate prize money and consistent sponsorship.
“We have extraordinary sporting talent in Nigeria, but talent alone is not enough to build a successful professional career. Athletes need quality competitions, adequate prize money, consistent sponsorship and an environment that allows them to earn a living from their sport,” Onojaife said.
She added that professional tennis players in Nigeria should be able to compete at a high level and earn meaningful incomes without feeling compelled to leave the country in search of better opportunities.
