Rivers United head coach Finidi George is not giving up on his side’s title hopes in spite of a seemingly insurmountable gap between them and table toppers Remo Stars, www.aclsports.com reports.
Finidi led his side to a last gasp 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Saturday to see his side cut Remo Stars’ lead to eight points after the champions-in-waiting lost at Bendel Insurance.
“I still believe that fighting for the league is still possible if we can go this way,” Finidi told ACLSports after the game.
“If we can pick points away and win our home games, we know Remo are coming here and Rangers are coming here so by the time we start doing this, we will close up the gap and who knows? maybe there will be pressure on their (Remo) part and they might slip so we keep doing what we’re doing, encourage the boys and see how far we can go,” added the 2023 NPFL league winning coach.
Impact of new signings
New signing Samson Obi Brossa scored the only goal for the Pride of Rivers in Saturday’s win, justifying some of the club’s recruitment at the middle of the season. The former Abia Warriors striker was making only his third appearance since joining United.
Finidi also speaks highly of their new signings and what they are already adding to his side as they go into the run-in.
“These are experienced players, especially the strikers. Bolu (Sholumade) is also doing well. We brought in players here to add to what we’ve been doing and they’re responding so we are quite happy and we hope we keep this going.
“We are working towards something and let’s see at the end of the day if we can achieve it because I believe it is achievable,” submitted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winners.
Rivers United next face a tricky test as they travel the farthest distance in the league to face stubborn El-Kanemi on Match Day 29 in what is expected to be stern scrutiny on their continental ambition.
