Reuniting with my sister after years apart felt surreal, but combining that emotional moment with finally meeting my nieces for the first time and exploring the beauty of Banff made this chapter of my World Cup journey even more unforgettable.
People often think covering a FIFA World Cup is all about the football, the stadiums, the atmosphere and the big moments. And yes, it is. But this World Cup gave me something even more precious: unforgettable family memories.
Throughout my flight from Toronto to Calgary, I found myself reflecting on how far this journey had taken me and how many things had to fall into place for this moment to happen.
One thing, though… can someone explain domestic flights to me? No complimentary snacks? No food? Is this really how they do things here? Even water had to be bought, and you could only pay by card. I definitely wasn’t prepared for that surprise!
The airport had one more unexpected moment before I even boarded. While passengers were checking in, a man suddenly lost his temper and smashed about five check-in monitors. Within seconds, the area went from calm to complete chaos. Security tried to intervene, but it took police using a Taser before they could finally bring him under control and take him away. Definitely not the kind of pre-flight drama anyone wants.
Thankfully, the rest of the journey was much calmer.
My brother-in-law picked me at the airport, and it was genuinely great seeing him again. Fantastic guy… even if he supports Arsenal. Ever since they won the league, the confidence has reached championship levels. Arsenal fans really don’t know how to behave after success, do they?
As we got closer to the house, I became quieter. I had imagined this moment many times, but nothing could prepare me for how it would feel.
Then something hilarious happened, we were wearing exactly the same shirt.
A Super Falcons jersey.
Sister telepathy? Maybe.
Looking back now, I’m honestly surprised I didn’t cry the moment I saw her. After years apart, that hug felt like time had simply stood still.
Even now, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all. One moment I was covering the biggest tournament in football, and the next I was sharing that moment with my sister. Sometimes life moves so quickly that your heart can’t quite catch up with what your eyes are seeing.
My heart was simply full.
Moments like these remind you that some of life’s greatest victories never come with a medal.
Full of gratitude to God, to www.aclsports.com and my boss, Calvin Onwuka, for believing in me and making this journey possible.
When I return to Nigeria, my other siblings might have to roll out the red carpet and come bearing gifts before I allow them to hug me! After all, I’m officially the first person in our family to meet my nieces in person. That’s a title I’m proudly keeping.
The next day, we travelled to Banff with some family friends, one of whom was celebrating her birthday.
What a place.
It almost didn’t look real. Everywhere you turned felt like something from a postcard.
The mountains. The lakes. The fresh air.
Banff is one of those places that reminds you just how breathtaking God’s creation truly is. Pictures don’t quite do it justice, but that didn’t stop me from taking hundreds of them. I needed enough evidence to prove I was actually there.
As we made our way home, the weight of everything that had happened over the past few months finally began to sink in.
The FIFA accreditation.
The visa process.
The waiting.
The prayers.
The support.
The countless moments of hoping everything would fall into place.
I could feel all those emotions finally catching up with me.
But where they finally did and what followed, is a story for the next diary.
