The long-running summer transfer saga of Terem Moffi could soon be nearing completion.
Negotiations have stepped up a gear in recent days, with Hamburg and Nice reportedly agreeing terms for a deal to be completed, after missing a previous deadline. It’s understood Hamburg have agreed to sign Moffi this week, with L’Équipe revealing that the Nigerian international has agreed in principle with the Bundesliga club.
He was even expected to complete his medical this week, with his move now seemingly just a matter of time. For Hamburg, signing Moffi would mark the end of a busy recruitment process for the Bundesliga side, who finally landed their man.

By the end of August, it became clear that Hamburg were serious about signing Moffi. OGC Nice had been negotiating with multiple clubs for the Nigeria international before it became clear the Bundesliga outfit were among their favorites.
It was then reported by africaexpertnetwork.com that Nice had accepted Hamburg’s offer but were unable to disclose the financial terms. Moffi’s deal with Nice ran until June 2027 at this point, so securing a deal was key for Hamburg. Exact details emerged a few days later, with French outlet L’Équipe reporting that Moffi and Hamburg had agreed personal terms, with the Nigeria international penning a deal worth around €2.500 million over three years, with bonuses added.
This lifts the deal from being a transfer rumor to expected certainty. Moffi’s medical this week would be the last step before completion.
Moffi: From Big-Money Signing to Low-Cost Turnover
If you’d have told someone that Nice would be happy to sell Moffi this summer for €2.5 million just 18 months ago, they would’ve laughed in your face. Signed by the Ligue 1 side from Lorient permanently in January 2023, following an initial loan spell, Moffi went on to score 11 goals in Ligue 1 – the joint highest tally at the club – during his first campaign as a permanent signing.
He scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for Nice over two years before tensions between player and club boiled over during his final months. While Nice are selling Moffi this summer for significantly less than they paid for him, they are still generating a profit on their initial investment thanks to the bonuses contained within the deal.
But there’s more to the story for Nice than just losing money on their original purchase. They’re also happy to see Moffi go because he was costing them a lot of money. According to L’équipe, Moffi earned Nice more than €300,000 per month. This move will save them a small fortune.
Porto gave him a title — but not a permanent home
Last season Moffi joined FC Porto on loan, but despite winning the title in Portugal, he’ll be hoping to replicate that success on a more permanent basis with Hamburg. The Nigeria international scored just twice in 15 appearances, according to L’équipe, and Porto decided against triggering his €8 million buy-option at the end of the season.
Going on a loan deal that offered him the chance to reset following a difficult conclusion to his Nice spell, this likely wasn’t part of the plan. Returning to Nice this summer was likely his preferred option, but with his standing at the club now, Hamburg’s decision to enter the race for his signature couldn’t have come soon enough.
Issues back at Nice Led to Transfer
Negatively attracting more attention for an incident with supporters following a loss away to Lorient last November than his performances, Moffi struggled to put together many notable showings for Nice in his final months at the club. Nice also had financial incentive to sell Moffi, according to L’Équipe. The publication wrote in July that the club was looking to reduce its wage bill, with Moffi included on a long list of players they wanted to move on this summer.
Given his tenure at Nice came to an inglorious end and his loan spell at Porto wasn’t the solution either, Hamburg are showing significant faith in Moffi’s ability. If he clicks in Germany, there’s no reason why Moffi can’t score goals at this level just as he did in France.
Moffi could Open New Chapter with Nigeria Thanks to Hamburg Move
Being a regular in the Super Eagles side hasn’t come easy for Moffi. He currently has 23 caps and six goals to his name but now could be his big chance to force his way into boss Jose Peseiro’s plans. Playing regularly for Hamburg would do him the world of good, and given his pedigree when afforded a starting role, there’s every chance he becomes a fan favorite in no time at all.
He has started 14 Ligue 1 matches this season, scoring 4 goals, but he needs more game time. Moving to Hamburg won’t just reset Moffi’s career by moving to a new league and country; it also allows him to kick-start his stuttering international career by playing week in, week out for his club side.
