Goalkeeper Orlando Gill and midfielder Julio Enciso shared their thoughts after Paraguay’s penalty shoot-out win over Germany, which sealed their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, www.aclsports.com reports.
Gill delivered a man-of-the-match performance at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, making two crucial saves in Paraguay’s 4-3 shoot-out victory on Monday after the game ended 1-1 following 120 minutes.
The result saw Germany suffer their first-ever FIFA World Cup elimination via a penalty shoot-out, having previously won all four of their shoot-outs in the competition.
The goalkeeper revealed the emotions behind his decisive saves, admitting that preparation played a key role in his heroics.
“I felt a little tickle in my stomach after saving the first penalty. I studied the penalties a lot and, thank God, I was able to get the first one right. And honestly, after the second one, it was an immense emotion.”
Gill also acknowledged the difficulty of the contest, with Germany constantly threatening throughout the match.
“It was a very complicated match. Germany came from all sides. They were also pushing for the win and they have very good players. We knew how to handle it well.”
Reflecting on the emotion of the moment after the final whistle, Gill admitted the achievement was difficult to put into words.
“There are many feelings. Obviously, you don’t know how to express it, but I’m happy for the qualification and for giving the team a hand in the penalty shoot-out. This qualification is dedicated to all Paraguayan people.”
Enciso, who scored Paraguay’s first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout goal, praised the team’s mentality and belief after overcoming one of the tournament’s biggest nations, highlighting the sacrifice behind their performance.
“This is the result of everything, of all the sacrifice we go through every day in training. This is football. You don’t talk before the time comes.”
He said the team showed they belong on the biggest stage and should not fear any opponent.
“Paraguay is ready for great things. We shouldn’t be intimidated by anyone in the world.”
Enciso added that the squad’s strength lies in unity and collective belief.
“With this team, I will stand toe-to-toe with anyone. I have no preference.”
He ended with an emotional dedication to his late grandfather, describing the moment as the most meaningful of his career so far.
“The one who was sitting next to my grandfather, I dedicate this to him. He will be proud of me. The best day of my life.”
