Super Eagles duo of Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze played key roles to help their Premier League side Fulham beat Burnley 3-2 in their away league match on Saturday night, www.aclsports.com reports.
Having lost to Crystal Palace in their last league game at home, Marco Silva and the Nigerian contingent targeted all three points at Turf Moor against a side that had lost six consecutive games. The trio of Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, and Alex Iwobi, who have been listed in Eric Chelle’s final squad for the AFCON, started the game for the Cottagers.
Just nine minutes in, Emile Smith Rowe put Fulham ahead from a wonderful delivery from Harry Wilson. The lead lasted just 12 minutes as the home side roared back into contention through Lesley Ugochukwu, who is also of Nigerian heritage. However, Fulham would go back into the lead after the half-hour mark when Wilson’s cross was headed home by Calvin Bassey.
Fulham continued from that moment on, and a few minutes after the break, they increased their lead. Chukwueze, with his fifth goal involvement in five games, set up Wilson to cap off a wonderful evening for the Welsh midfielder.
A late goal from Oliver Sonne tried to derail things, but the visitors held on for just their second away win of the season. The win took the West London side up to 13th on the log with 20 points after 16 matches played.
The trio is now expected to team up with the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON in Morocco.
