The Super Falcons of Nigeria recorded a 1-0 victory over the Queen Scorpions of Gambia in the first leg of the final qualifying round of the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) on Wednesday evening.

The 8 time AWCON champions started the brighter than the hosts, creating numerous goal scoring chances but their effort soon paid off in the 19th minute when Okoronkwo Amarachi gave the Falcons the lead.

Despite taking the lead early on, the Falcons couldn’t find a second but instead held on to claim all three points at the Independence stadium in Bakau, thanks to Okoronkwo’s long range effort from about 25 yards.

The return fixture will take place by 4pm on Monday, 11th of June at the Agege Soccer Temple, Lagos; as the Super Falcons hope to make it into the group stage of the 11th edition of the African Women Cup of Nations billed to take place in Ghana later this year.
