World record holder Tobi Amusan delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal of the 2026 African Athletics Championships in the women’s 100m hurdles in Ghana, www.aclsports.com reports.
On Day Two of the championships at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Amusan was dominant over the barriers, powering to victory to reaffirm her status as one of Africa’s leading sprint hurdlers. The win further strengthens her reputation as a three time African champion and three time African Games champion.
Behind her, Ashley Miller of Zimbabwe claimed silver in a tightly contested final, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo secured bronze after a strong finish.
There was further drama in the women’s 100m final, where Rosemary Chukwuma initially celebrated what she believed was victory before being awarded silver after the official results were confirmed. The result was complicated by the absence of official timings at the time, with organisers still dealing with several operational issues, including a faulty timing system, no live results, incomplete data without wind readings, and inconsistent disqualifications. Team Nigeria has since lodged a protest, insisting Chukwuma should have been crowned champion, with the final outcome now subject to appeal.
Nigeria also recorded a breakthrough in the men’s 100m, where Chidera Ezeakor claimed bronze, his first individual senior championship medal for the country. He finished behind Emmanuel Eseme and Bradley Nkoana.
Sade Olatoye added silver in the women’s hammer throw with a best effort of 69.60m.
On Day One, Nigeria opened their account with a double podium finish in the women’s discus. Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie won gold with a throw of 57.00m, while Divine Oladipo marked her first international appearance for Nigeria following her switch from Great Britain, taking silver at 55.37m. Obiageri Amaechi completed the podium with bronze after a throw of 53.23m.
After two days of competition in Ghana, Nigeria have now won seven medals, one gold, three silver and three bronze, across track and field events.
