Hockey: Africa Cup for Club Champions Day 1 Round Up

2018 Africa Cup for Club Champions kicked off on Saturday at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, Accra, Ghana with six female and six male hockey sides.

The female teams include: defending champions Telekom Orange of Kenya, Strathmore of Kenya, Nigeria Champions Kada Queens, Yobe Desert Queens of Nigeria, Police Club of Ghana and GRA women of Ghana while the male teams comprise of defending champions Eastern Company Club of Egypt, El Sharkia Club of Egypt, Nigeria champions Niger Flickers, Police Machine of Nigeria, GRA men of Ghana and Trustees of Ghana.

On day one of the competition in the female category, the two Nigerian representatives were demolished by their Ghana and Kenyan opponents respectively. Nigerian Champions Kada Queens were dismantled by Police Club of Ghana after four quarters while Yobe Desert Queens were beaten by defending champions Telekom Orange of Kenya 5-0 in the second match of the day. Ghana’s GRA Women thrashed Strathmore of Kenya 4-0 in the last game of the female category.

In the men’s event, Eastern Company Club of Egypt, the defending Champions, beat Nigeria Police 3-1. In the most entertaining game of the day, Ghanaian Trustees squared off against Nigerian Champions, Niger Flickers. Seven goals were recorded as ten men Niger Flickers came from behind to silence the home crowd, 4-3.  In the final match of the day, El Sharkia Club of Egypt walloped GRA Men of Ghana 5-2.

Meanwhile, Nigeria and Ghana played each other in the Master game. The masters is for hockey players aged 50 and above. Former Rivers State Hockey Chairman Arthur Jumbo scored the winning goal for the Nigerian Hockey masters as they won 4-3 after four quarters.
