Julián Quiñones insisted Mexico must stay focused after a 2-0 victory over Ecuador made it into the round of 16, ending a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout-stage win, www.aclsports.com reports.
The forward was decisive in the win, scoring one goal and providing an assist as Mexico also continued its impressive defensive run, becoming the first team since Italy in 1990 to win their first four World Cup matches without conceding a goal.
Speaking after the match, Quiñones reflected on the result and the importance of collective effort behind Mexico’s progress.
“First of all, I’m happy for the result we got today, and that is what truly matters. The individual aspect comes from all the collective work we have done little by little, and I’m always happy to wear this shirt and give the best of myself.”
He spoke about the journey that brought him to this stage and the responsibility he feels representing Mexico.
“Life is always like this, fight until you achieve what you want. Today I am getting the opportunity, and I am taking full advantage of it. Thanks to all the people who have supported me, supported this national team, the coaching staff, and my teammates who have always supported me in every difficult moment of my life.”
Quiñones also emphasized the team’s mentality despite the achievement.
“We haven’t won anything yet.”
Midfielder Erik Lira also stressed focus and perspective, highlighting the team’s emotional balance despite reaching the round of 16.
“We are focused, and when you are focused, we don’t always get to see or feel completely the emotion that people are feeling,” Lira said.
He added that the reaction from family and friends has made the moment special from a distance.
“But at least for me, my family, and some friends who see it from the outside, I can’t believe it, and I’m very happy that they are enjoying it.”
With Mexico advancing, Lira believes the team must continue pushing forward without limits.
“The ceiling is very high, and we are not satisfied with anything,” he said.
