Nigeria finished fourth while India topped the final medal standings at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, www.aclsports.com reports.
The six-day tournament, held at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic City, saw hosts Nigeria finish fourth with one gold, five silver and 18 bronze medals, while India amassed 25 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronze medals, with their wheelchair team completing a clean sweep on the final day.
Seventeen-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson was among Nigeria’s standout performers, claiming the team’s only gold medal, while the debutant wheelchair fencing squad also made a strong contribution to the hosts’ medal haul, securing a majority of the silver and bronze medals.
England finished second with three gold, two silver and nine bronze medals, while Wales took third place after claiming a late gold in the men’s veteran sabre. South Africa completed the top five with one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
The championships featured 20 nations, with Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Australia and Singapore among the other countries that won medals during the competition.
At the closing ceremony, National Sports Commission Director General Bukonla Olopade praised the Nigeria Fencing Federation, led by Adeyinka Samuel, for its role in delivering the championships.
Olopade pledged continued government support for fencing and rewarded members of Team Nigeria with cash prizes in recognition of their performances.
Samuel, who was elected the first African president of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation and won silver in the men’s veteran sabre, thanked those who supported the championships and pledged to build on the progress made by Nigerian fencing.
