Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed the reason behind his decision to leave Nottingham Forest for newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City, www.aclsports.com reports.
Awoniyi, 29, completed a permanent transfer to the Sky Blues after four seasons in the Premier League with Forest, where he scored 21 league goals in 90 appearances. The City Ground outfit did well to celebrate him and give him a befitting send-off for his time there.
Awoniyi made no secret of his delight after completing the move, expressing his eagerness to begin a new chapter with Coventry City.
“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” said the former Liverpool man.
“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship; they were incredible, and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
The forward spent the last four seasons with Nottingham Forest, scoring 21 Premier League goals in 90 appearances and 23 goals in 103 matches across all competitions.
After starting his professional career at Liverpool, Taiwo Awoniyi gained experience through loan spells across Europe before moving to Germany, where he featured for Mainz 05 and Union Berlin.
His impressive performances earned him a permanent move to Union Berlin in 2021, before Nottingham Forest broke their transfer record to sign the Nigerian in 2022. Awoniyi, who has ten caps for Nigeria, netted 11 goals in his first campaign at the City Ground to help them avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight.
Awoniyi will now link up with international teammate Frank Onyeka at Coventry City, with both Nigerians hoping to play key roles in helping the club retain their Premier League status at the end of the season.
