Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has explained her omission from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), revealing that she is still recovering from injury, www.aclsports.com reports.

The Al Ittihad defender’s absence was one of the notable talking points after Madugu unveiled Nigeria’s squad for the continental tournament.

Plumptre played a key role in Nigeria’s title-winning run as the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final to secure a record 10th continental crown. She admitted she was disappointed to miss the 2026 tournament but confirmed she is taking the necessary time to fully recover.

Plumptre shared a message on social media after missing out on head coach Justine Madugu’s 25-player squad for the tournament in Morocco.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening.

“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.

“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you.

“I am with you ladies.

“Naija no dey carry last.”

Despite her absence, Plumptre urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons as they aim to retain their continental crown and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Nigeria will begin their title defence in Rabat, Morocco, on 28 July against tournament debutants Malawi, before facing Zambia on 1 August and Egypt on 5 August in their remaining Group C fixtures.
