Sulaibikhat VC of Kuwait player, Richard Amanor believes that Ghanaian volleyball players have the potential to succeed in European clubs if given the opportunity.
In an exclusive interview with www.aclsports.com, the former Yarmouk VC of Saudi Arabia shared that his Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the Ghanaian League opened doors for his professional career.
Amanor explained that his passion for volleyball began during his secondary school days at Junior High School in Asutsuare.
He said, “Yes, of course, many Ghanaian players are just as skilled as most European players. They can play at that level if given the opportunity.
“I fell in love with volleyball during my time at Junior High School in Asutsuare. My love for the game grew to the point where if I didn’t play on a given day, I didn’t feel comfortable. This passion has continued to drive me up to where I am today.”
He also compared the standard of the Kuwaiti volleyball league to the Ghanaian league, explaining that the difference in infrastructure plays a role.
“The Kuwaiti league is of a much higher standard, especially when compared to the Ghanaian league. You cannot compare an indoor league like this to an outdoor league. Additionally, the presence of top international players in Kuwait further raises the level of competition.”
Amanor also credited his success to recognition in the Ghanaian League, particularly his three-time MVP awards.
“It all started when I won the MVP award in the Ghanaian League. That recognition really boosted my profile and played a big role in getting me this opportunity to play professionally here in Kuwait,” he said.
When offering advice to younger players, Amanor stressed the importance of discipline and self belief.
He said, “To the younger generation, I always say they should not neglect their personal training.
“Self-confidence must remain high, no matter what challenges come their way. They must always believe in themselves and not be discouraged by others’ opinions. I encourage them to learn beyond what their coaches teach them and, most importantly, to put God first in everything they do.”
Amanor has played for various clubs, including AS Spikers, Young Spikers, Ghana Police, Al Hedayah of Saudi Arabia, and Yarmouk VC of Saudi Arabia.
