The Super Falcons of Nigeria continue their WAFCON title defence on Sunday when they face Cameroon in a heavyweight quarter-final, with a place in the semi-finals and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.
The contest brings together two of Africa’s most established women’s football nations in what has become the most-played fixture in WAFCON history. Sunday’s meeting will be the 14th between the sides at the continental finals, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has produced some of the competition’s most memorable moments.
Cameroon arrive unbeaten after finishing top of Group D, while defending champions Nigeria recovered from a difficult start to progress from Group C as runners-up and reach the last eight.
Nigeria’s Knockout Record
Nigeria have never lost a WAFCON quarter-final and have never conceded in the last eight, winning both of their matches since the quarter-final stage was introduced in 2022. They beat Cameroon 1-0 in 2022 before defeating Zambia 5-0 at the previous edition.
The Super Falcons head into Sunday’s quarter-final with confidence after their commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt. They have scored nine goals at the tournament, with six different players finding the net.
Asisat Oshoala has scored in consecutive matches to take her WAFCON tally to 16 goals. She also scored in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the 2014 final, while Rasheedat Ajibade has been influential, scoring twice in the group stage and netting the winner when Nigeria last faced Cameroon in the 2022 quarter-finals.
Nigeria are also unbeaten in five previous WAFCON matches at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, winning four and drawing one while conceding only once.
Cameroon’s Unbeaten Run
Cameroon head into Sunday’s quarter-final unbeaten at WAFCON 2026 after topping Group D with two wins and a draw.
The Indomitable Lionesses have scored four goals and conceded twice at the tournament, with Marie Ngah Manga accounting for three of their goals and Grace Mendoua also finding the net.
Cameroon have reached the knockout stage in 12 of their 13 WAFCON appearances and have lost only once in their last 12 matches in open play. That defeat came against Nigeria in the 2022 quarter-finals.
They have also played all three of their matches at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium at this tournament, winning two and drawing one. A victory on Sunday would send Cameroon into the semi-finals and secure their return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2019.
A Rivalry Renewed
Cameroon and Nigeria have met at every stage of the WAFCON, from the group stage to the final, with the rivalry producing three title deciders.
Nigeria have won all three finals between the sides, in 2004, 2014 and 2016. They have also won nine of the previous 13 meetings in open play and two more on penalties, while Cameroon have one victory and one draw.
Their rivalry includes memorable meetings such as Nigeria’s 6-0 semi-final victory in 1998, the 2-2 group-stage draw before their 5-0 final win in 2004, and Cameroon’s 1-0 third-place play-off victory in 2012.
The 2016 final remains one of the defining moments, with Desire Oparanozie scoring the only goal in Yaoundé after Cameroon had reached the final without conceding. Nigeria have scored 33 goals and conceded six across the 13 meetings, keeping eight clean sheets.
