Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Taiwo Liadi told www.aclsports.com that weightlifting changed her life positively and made her meet personalities across the world.

Taiwo Liadi won silver 🥈 medal in the 76kg women’s weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games with a lift of 96kg in the snatch event, following her record 120kg lift in the clean and jerk with a total of 216kg setting two Junior Commonwealth records.

Liadi revealed that her parents disapproved of joining weightlifting because they were told she will not get married in the future.

She said her parents changed their mind after the 2019 African Games in Morocco where she brought home foreign currency as her reward for winning medals for the country.

The African silver medallist said, “I do not know where I would have been now if I had not become a weightlifter. Weightlifting has changed my life and given me proper orientation and I have met Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari because of my exploits in the game. Initially my parents frowned at me joining weightlifting as he was told I will not be able to get married.

“When I represented Nigeria at the 2019 African Games in Morocco, I won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in the women’s 81kg. Immediately I got home with the reward in foreign currency, my parents became happy and gave me their total support”.

Liadi told www.aclsports.com that the most memorable moment of her weightlifting career was when she won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

She said winning the bronze medal was a long time dream come true.

She said, “My most memorable moment as a weightlifter was when I won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. I was excited to become a Commonwealth Games medallist because I have been dreaming of winning laurels at International Championships.

“Carting away 3 gold medals meant a lot to me; I was ill a few days before my event at the 2022 National Sports Festival but still won. I give God all the glory because he deserves it. Next on my agenda is to keep fit and continue training in order to emerge champion at International engagements and ultimately dominate the 2023 African Games in Ghana”, she added
