Nigeria Premier Football League side Sporting Lagos have confirmed the appointment of Abdullahi Biffo as the club’s new Head Coach, www.aclsports.com reports.
The managerial change became necessary for the Lagos-based club after erstwhile head coach Paul Offor was shown the exit door owing to recent underwhelming performances with eight games to go in the 2023/24 NPFL season. In search of redemption, Biffo, who last managed in the Nigerian top-flight in 2021, has now made a return with the noisy Lagosians.
In a statement released by the club on Friday afternoon, Biffo confirmed his readiness to lead the club, citing the passion of the club owner as one of the reasons he has decided to return to management in the NPFL.
“I’m very proud to be the head coach at this great Club,” began the former Kwara United handler.
“I’ve been following Sporting Lagos for a while [I used to attend the games at Teslim], and I love everything the Club is doing. I didn’t think I would ever return to coaching in Nigeria but this passion the owner of the Club has shown is very convincing. It is obvious that this is a long-term project with big plans and I’m happy to be a part of it.
“The Club has really quality players, some of whom I’ve worked with before, and I’m looking forward to continuing the work of making this a Club Lagos is proud of. I can’t wait to be in front of the fans I’ve heard so much about and make them proud,” Biffo concluded.
Biffo, who led Kwara United to the CAF Confederation Cup in 2021 following a third-place finish, has managed the likes of Abia Warriors and Niger Tornadoes in the NPFL. He was also the first-ever coach of FC Dender — today known as Remo Stars. He spent the last two years training coaches and developing youth in football academies in the United States.
Godwin Enakhena, chairman of Sporting Lagos said: “Biffo brings a wealth of experience to Sporting Lagos and we’re happy to round up the season with him. We will keep playing the attacking brand of football Lagos is proud of and we’re excited about what the future holds for Sporting.”
Biffo, who takes charge of the team immediately, will lead them for the first time on match day 31 when they travel to face Katsina United in Katsina on Sunday.
