Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, has emphasised the importance of the Super Falcons qualifying for the FIFAWWC and winning the WAFCON, while expressing optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He also voiced concern over reports that sprinter Favour Ofili may have switched allegiance to Turkey.
Speaking to www.aclsports.com at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, June 22, 2025, during the Troost-Ekong Foundation Charity Match, where he captained “Team Green”, Dikko commended the initiative and its impact.
“He is setting a great example as a captain, leading from the front. By putting this event together, I’m sure other players will learn from what he’s doing. That’s why we’re here, to support him,” Dikko said, referring to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong.
On being part of the charity match, he added: “I’m very inspired. It’s an honour and privilege to play alongside some of our best stars. Football brings people together, and if you are fortunate enough to reach the top, you should use your platform to make a difference, just like Ekong is doing here. I’m sure this will have a lasting impact and encourage others to follow suit.”
When asked if the NSC would leverage this initiative to inspire more athletes, he said, “I’m confident the NFF and other football stakeholders in Nigeria will continue to encourage players to give back.”
On reports that Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has switched allegiance to Turkey, Dikko said there has been no official confirmation from World Athletics. “If it’s true, it’s very sad. One of our responsibilities at the NSC and within the federations is to ensure athletes are well supported. It would be a huge blow. But regardless, she remains a Nigerian. If confirmed, of course there will be discussions between both parties.”
He added that the NSC is working on improving athlete welfare and providing more incentives to retain top talent.
Speaking about Nigeria’s chances at the upcoming WAFCON and the efforts of coach Justine Madugu, Dikko expressed confidence: “Nigeria is always the favourite going into a tournament like this. Winning is what’s expected. First, they need to qualify for the World Cup. Once they achieve that, then we can focus on lifting the trophy, which is always the Super Falcons’ objective.”
Ahead of the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers resuming in September, Dikko also shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles’ chances.
“It’s never over until it’s over. They know what they need to do, win their next four matches, and we’ll see where that takes us. The players must stay focused and give their all.”
In the end, Dikko’s message was one of unity, hope, and action, calling on athletes, administrators, and fans to work together to elevate Nigerian sports to new heights. “When we support each other, invest in our talents, and lead by example, there’s no limit to what we can achieve,” he concluded.
