Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi, has become the most expensive Nigerian footballer ever after his £40m transfer to Everton on deadline day.

Iwobi has since put pen to paper on a five-year contract that will see him stay at the Toffees until the summer of 2024, with his fee the highest Arsenal have received for a player.

“Alex Iwobi is joining Everton in a permanent transfer, ” Arsenal said in a statement on their official website.

Having failed with bids for Wilfred Zaha of Crystal Palace and Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, the Toffees turned attention to the Super Eagles star as their next target.

However, Everton had an initial £30m offer for the 23-year-old rejected by Arsenal on Wednesday but returned with an improved bid which the Gunners accepted just in time before the window closed on Thursday.

Iwobi came through the ranks at Arsenal having joined the club at the age of 15 before making his senior debut in October, 2015 at the age of 19.

Speaking on the move, Everton boss, Marco Silva is excited with his latest addition.

“Alex was one of our main targets for this window and I believe he is a fantastic signing for Everton. He is a direct and skilful winger and attacking midfielder who always works very hard for his team.”

Iwobi played 149 games for Arsenal, scoring 15 times and contributing to 42 goals.
