Enyimba FC goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode says his team’s 1-0 win over Abia Warriors in the Abia Derby on Tuesday is very crucial as they continue preparations for next week’s clash with Al Merrikh of Sudan.
Kayode, 28, captained the People’s Elephant in their opening Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game of the season decided at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba in a game decided by a 53rd minute penalty converted by debutant Samad Kadiri.
“I am thankful for the victory against Abia Warriors today, not just because we are victorious but also because I was the captain for the game. It is a morale booster for me,” the former Akwa United goalkeeper told

Kayode, whom many believe is due a national team call-up welcomed Rohr’s renewed interest in locally based players.
“I’m happy that the Super Eagles coach watched the game as he has an eye for home based players now and we are very excited about it so we would want to give our best at all times so we can have have our own share in the team,” added Kayode.
The win comes eight days before Fatai Osho-led Enyimba face Al Merrikh of Sudan in what promises to be their most important game of the season yet;
having lost the first leg 0-3 in Omdurman last week.

“Most importantly I thank God for today’s victory because it was not an easy one.
“It was a very difficult game for us but it is also a good test for us because we have a serious challenge ahead of us against Al Merrikh so this will boost our morale and by the grace of God we will make Nigerians proud,” he concluded.
Before the Merrikh game, Enyimba will be on the road to Ilorin to face Kwara United in a Match Day two game this weekend.
