Defending Champions of the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Bayelsa Queens began the 2019 abridged league season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Kaduna Queens in Yenagoa on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Rafiat Sule and Joy Bokiri in the 8th and 30th minute ensured that the reigning champions went into the break with a comfortable two goal lead on match day 1 of the new season.

Anjor Mary then added a third after the hour mark as the champions were off to a flying start in Yenagoa. With Nasarawa Amazons holding Sunshine Queens to a draw in Akure, match day one result leaves Bayelsa Queens as table toppers in Group C.

In similar fashion, first half goals from Kemi Famuditi and Micheal Joy sealed all three points for Confluence Queens against Ibom Angels in Lokoja. While Abia Angels survived a scare from newcomers Invincible Angels winning 2-1 to stay second in Group D on goal difference.

Meanwhile it was a close one between Rivers Angels and FC Robo as both teams battled for points in Port-Harcourt in the season opener. It however took a penalty which was converted by Evelyn Nwabuoku to separate both sides at the end of ninety minutes.

After playing ninety minutes without a goal in Osogbo between Osun Babes and Delta Queens, Nwabuoku’s penalty currently keeps Rivers Angels top of Group A of the abridged NWFL.

While in Group B Edo Queens go top courtesy of a second half goal from Grace Henry which handed them all three points against debutants Dream Stars Ladies away from home in Lagos.
The other fixture of Group B saw Heartland Queens of Owerri play out a barren draw at home to Adamawa Queens.
