The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has fined Ibom Angels ₦2.5 million and imposed a three-home-match closed-door sanction following crowd violence during their Premiership clash with Bayelsa Queens in Uyo, www.aclsports.com reports.
The disciplinary measures were confirmed on Thursday after the league reviewed match officials’ reports and video evidence from the fixture played on Wednesday at the Uyo Township Stadium.
According to the NWFL, supporters of Ibom Angels invaded the field of play and assaulted players and officials of Bayelsa Queens, an incident the league described as a serious breach of its regulations and the principles of fair play.
As a result, the club was found guilty of multiple violations and fined a total of ₦2.5 million. The breakdown includes ₦1.5 million for offences relating to assault, intimidation and offensive conduct, as well as an additional ₦1 million for bringing the game into disrepute and failing to provide adequate security.
In addition to the financial penalty, Ibom Angels have been ordered to play their next three home matches behind closed doors in line with the NWFL regulations.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the sanctions were necessary to protect the integrity of the league and ensure the safety of all participants.
“The safety of players, officials and match personnel is non-negotiable,” Shabi said. “What happened in Uyo represents a clear breach of our regulations, and the NWFL will not tolerate any form of violence capable of undermining the league.”
The affected fixtures to be played without spectators are Ibom Angels’ home matches against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens and Naija Ratels, scheduled for January and February.
The NWFL further warned that any repeat of such incidents or failure to comply with the sanctions could attract more severe disciplinary measures.
