Chioma Cynthia Nweke clocked 11.62s to win gold in the women’s 100m final at the CAA Region 2 Championships in Accra on Monday, www.aclsports.com reports.

The Nigerian sprinter, who recently won the U20 women’s 100m title at the African U18/U20 Championships in Abeokuta, added another feather to her cap by claiming her first senior international crown. Compatriot Olayinka Olajide followed in second place with a time of 11.72s, while Isatou Sey of Gambia settled for bronze in 12.00s.

The two-day championship, now in its second edition, is taking place at the University of Ghana Legon Sports Complex with over 450 athletes from 16 West African nations competing across 20 track and field events.

Team Nigeria, who topped the medals table at the inaugural edition in 2023 with 13 gold, four silver and one bronze medal, are in Accra with a 26-athlete contingent. At the maiden edition, the squad had just 22 athletes.

As well as defending their regional dominance, Team Nigeria are also using the competition to secure World Championship relay qualification spots in the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m events.

With Nweke’s victory setting the pace, expectations are high that Nigeria can once again underline their strength on the West African stage in Accra.
