Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his joy and relief after inspiring Celtic to a dramatic Scottish Premiership title, saying he “can’t let go” of the trophy, www.aclsports.com reports.
Having struggled for form in recent times, the 29-year-old revived his fortunes in Scotland after leaving Sevilla FC, contributing significantly to his club’s title success on Saturday.
The former Manchester City man turned hero for the Hoops, scoring a stoppage-time penalty to seal a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Motherwell on Wednesday. The crucial win kept their title hopes alive heading into the final-day showdown against Hearts on Sunday, where the perennial champions wrapped up the crown with a convincing 3-1 triumph.
“It was a big tension, and it’s a massive pressure,” Iheanacho said about the intense pressure he was under when he entered the game.
On winning the Scottish Premiership, Iheanacho said, “It’s another silverware for me. I haven’t won silverware for a while now, so I’m happy I won silverware with this massive club.”
Hearts were chasing a historic, 66-year-old dream, while Celtic needed nothing less than a win to secure their 56th league title. Hearts led through Lawrence Shankland before the home side rallied back with goals from Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda, and Callum Osmand to secure the victory.
Iheanacho, who will be hoping to return to the Super Eagles fold for the Unity Cup, ended his debut season with eight goals from 23 appearances in all competitions, including decisive strikes in the title race.
