Former D’Tigress captain and five-time FIBA Women’s AfroBasket winner, Sarah Ogoke, has announced her retirement from the Nigeria women’s national basketball team, bringing the curtain down on an international career that spanned more than a decade, www.aclsports.com reports.

The 36-year-old, who made her debut for Nigeria in 2011, is the only player in history to have won five FIBA AfroBasket titles, doing so consecutively in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025. This remarkable run also included a 29-game unbeaten streak in AfroBasket competition between 2015 and 2025, cementing Nigeria’s dominance on the continent and establishing her as a central figure of the golden generation.

Her international journey began at the 2011 All-Africa Games in Mozambique, before she featured later that same year at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Mali, marking the start of a decorated career that would see her become one of the team’s most dependable players.

She also represented Nigeria on the global stage, competing at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, where she played a starring role in a historic moment for the team. In that tournament, Ogoke scored 22 points to lead Nigeria to their first-ever World Cup victory against Turkey. Following that landmark performance, she went on to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics, taking on some of the world’s strongest teams and helping raise the profile of African women’s basketball.

Ogoke’s leadership within the squad grew steadily, and she eventually assumed the captaincy after former captain Adaora Elonu and several senior players were sidelined following a dispute with the federation during a turbulent period in the team. Despite these off-court challenges, she led D’Tigress to a historic fourth consecutive AfroBasket title in 2023.

She was named in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France and came on in the fourth quarter against the Philippines, scoring six points in eight minutes, including the final three-pointer in the win.

Off the court, Ogoke built a distinguished career as a podiatric surgeon, balancing elite sport with the demands of the medical profession. Her final competitive year was particularly remarkable, as she returned after giving birth to her son in late 2024 to feature in the 2025 AfroBasket.

With her retirement, D’Tigress bid farewell to one of the players who helped shape their modern success story, closing a chapter defined by leadership, resilience, and sustained excellence on the international stage.
