The Nigeria Army Wrestling team have intensified their preparations for the first Governor Neysom Wike Wrestling Championships in Port Harcourt, Rivers State come November.

The Soldiers currently camped in Kaduna are boosted with the presence of African champion, Gofit Winnie (female) and bronze medalist, Tochukwu Okeke.

In a chat with aclsports.com, the head coach of the team, Godswill Tiebiri said that at all was going according to plan in Kaduna as there were no injury worries in the team ahead of the Governor Wike Championships.

The former Greco-Roman Champion, said the Nigeria Army intends surpassing the feat achieved at the Governor Seriake Dickson classic last February.

“The team is well motivated by the Chief of Army staff and the environment is conducive. We are confident that record will not only be sustained, but will be surpassed winning more gold”, Tiebiri said.

Gofit Winnie (female) 75kg and Tochukwu Okeke (75kg) who made their first international debuts at the Africa Championship in Marrakech said the experience gathered will be transferred to their teammates.

“The camp for the championship is on and we’ve been training under the sun and in the rain because “no pain, no gain”. What is on our mind is to win medals for the army”, Winnie said.

“This is another platform to show that Nigeria Army are not only determined on the battlefield but can also excel in Sports”, said Okeke. The Nigeria Army last March placed third at the 2017 Governor Neysom Wike Wrestling Championships in Yenegoa, Bayelsa state.
