Ruth Asuquo Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event to give Nigeria their seventh medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, www.aclsports.com reports.
Nyong set a personal best of 75kg in the snatch before producing a dramatic finish in the clean and jerk on Sunday to finish second behind India’s Mirabai Chanu, who won gold with a Games Record total of 190kg. Malaysia’s Irene Henry claimed bronze.
After missing her first two attempts at 93kg, Nyong successfully completed the lift on her final attempt to finish with a combined total of 168kg and secure Nigeria’s fourth silver medal and seventh medal of the Games.
Favour Agboro narrowly missed out on a place on the podium in the men’s 65kg weightlifting event after finishing fourth with a total lift of 279kg. He lifted 122kg in the snatch and 157kg in the clean and jerk before successfully completing a 160kg lift on his final attempt, only for the effort to be ruled a no lift, leaving him just 3kg short of the bronze medal.
Nigeria returned to winning ways in the men’s 3×3 basketball competition with a thrilling 20-19 victory over Guyana. After suffering a 21-16 defeat to Scotland earlier in the day, the Nigerians led Guyana 19-15 before their opponents fought back to level the contest. Marcel Esonwune then scored the decisive basket in the final second to seal Nigeria’s second victory of the Games, with Esosa Okundaye leading the team with nine points. Their only other win came in the opening game against Cape Verde.
In boxing, Khadijat Ajisola was eliminated from the women’s 54kg competition after losing 3-2 on a split decision to Wales’ Helen Jones in a closely contested bout, with two of the five judges scoring the contest in the Nigerian’s favour before Jones ultimately secured the victory.
Nyong’s silver medal was Nigeria’s fourth of the Games, keeping the country fourth on the medal table after Day 3 with three gold medals, while hosts Scotland moved up to third.
Team Nigeria will be in action today across weightlifting, athletics, swimming, para-athletics and 3×3 basketball. Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede and Miracle Ezechukwu will feature in athletics, while the women’s 3×3 basketball team will face India.
