2018 AYG: Nigeria wrestlers cart away with 10 medals

Team Nigeria won 10 medals in the women’s wrestling event at the ongoing Africa Youth Games (AYG) in Algiers. Nigeria bagged three gold, five silver and two bronze after the end of Day 8.

Christianah Ogunsanya won Nigeria’s first gold medal after beating Valeria Ture of Gabon by 9-1 points, Hind Bachir of Algeria by 5-1 points and Imane Boujnane of Morocco 0-0 in the 46kg.

National and African Champion, Esther Kolawole beat Nisrine Hammas by 10-0 points, humbled Thilleli Merzouk by 11-0 points and defeated Zaine Sghaierto of Tunisia 5-2 to seal Nigeria second medal in the 65kg.

Meanwhile, African champion, Sunmisola Balogun beat Massah Jalloh of Sierra Leone by 2-0 points and Hanane Djabrani of Algeria 4-0 to win the country’s third gold medal in the women’s 69kg.

Esther Oluwatuyi (40kg), Esther Asaolu (43kg), Mercy Adekuoroye (53kg), Jumoke Adekoye (57kg) and Aina Ohida (61kg) won silver medals while Avorsha Idris (49kg) and Natasha David (73kg) settled for bronze medals.

Nigeria is now fourth on the medal table with 24 gold, 22 silver and 32 bronze medals.
