CAF has announced a significant prize money boost for WAFCON Morocco 2024, doubling the winner’s reward and increasing the total prize pool by 45%, www.aclsports.com reports.

The winner of this year’s WAFCON will take home $1,000,000, up from $500,000 in the previous edition. The runner-up will earn $500,000, while third- and fourth-place finishers will receive $350,000 and $300,000, respectively. Each of the four quarter-finalists will pocket $200,000. Teams finishing third in the group stage will earn $150,000, while those finishing fourth (three teams) will receive $125,000 each.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe said the move reflects the organisation’s growing investment in women’s football on the continent.

“CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa.

The 100% increase in the prize money for the winner and the 45% increase in total prize money should help improve salaries for players, coaches, and staff,” he said.

The prize money boost brings the total purse for WAFCON 2024 to $3.475 million, the highest in the tournament’s history.

CAF believes the increased rewards will not only raise the level of competition but also enhance the livelihoods of those involved in the game.

“The quality and standard of women’s football in Africa is world-class,” Motsepe added.

“We’re excited about the rising number of fans, broadcast viewers, and sponsors. WAFCON Morocco 2024 is set to be a huge success.”

As the tournament draws near, all eyes will be on Morocco as Africa’s top national teams battle for silverware, pride, and now, a much bigger financial reward.
