World record holder Tobi Amusan, clocked 12.53s to win her heat and advance to the semi-finals of the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The Nigerian hurdler crossed the line in 12.53 seconds, edging Devynne Charlton (Bahamas) in 12.69 and Elena Carraro (Italy) in 12.86 to claim her spot in the semifinals.
It was a fiercely contested opening round, with defending champion Danielle Williams (Jamaica) posting the fastest time in Heat 2, just ahead of Alaysha Johnson (United States) at 12.40. Other qualifiers included Grace Stark (United States) at 12.46, Nadine Visser (Netherlands) at 12.48, Masai Russell (United States) at 12.53, and Ackera Nugent (Jamaica) at 12.54, setting up a high-stakes next round.
Amusan, has been drawn in Semifinal Heat 2 on 15 September with Nadine Visser (Netherlands), Amoi Brown (Jamaica), Alaysha Johnson (United States), Pia Skrzyszowska (Poland), Hitomi Nakajima (Japan), Elena Carraro (Italy), and Saara Keskitalo (Finland), making it a high-stakes battle for a place in the final.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Day 2 campaign got underway with Oyesade Olatoye in the women’s hammer throw. The national champion threw 68.82m, finishing 10th in Group A and 21st overall, just missing out on a place in the final. The final was topped by Camryn Rogers (CAN) with 77.52m, followed by Silja Kosonen (FIN) at 75.88m and DeAnna Price (USA) with 74.99m.
