Sporting Lagos have been crowned champions of the Nigeria National League (NNL) despite a final-day 1-0 loss to Inter Lagos in the Super 4 tournament at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, www.aclsports.com reports.
The Tech Boys, buoyed by victories in their opening two matches of the Super 4 tournament, headed into the decisive clash against their city rivals with qualification firmly within reach. Meanwhile, Inter Lagos endured a slow start to the competition, falling to Doma United in their opener before bouncing back with a 2-0 triumph over Ranchers Bees to revive their campaign.
The Lagos derby game and the other contest between Doma United and Ranchers Bees kicked off simultaneously, but it was the former that took all the talking points before kick-off and during the contest, as fans trooped in to see the grand finale of the Super 4.
Inter Lagos made a bright start to the game when Bashiru Usman fired past goalkeeper Clinton Lawani in the 7th minute to open the scoring. Moments later, Aliyu Baba of Sporting Lagos was incorrectly flagged offside before he could draw his side level.
The Pride of Lagos dominated proceedings for large spells of the contest but were unable to extend their advantage. Sporting Lagos eventually grew into the game, yet they found Inter goalkeeper Saviour Atabi in inspired form, producing a series of fine saves to keep them at bay.
Despite their relentless attempts to fight back into the contest, Inter Lagos remained resolute at the back to keep Sporting Lagos at bay and secure the victory. However, Sporting Lagos still emerged champions, edging their rivals to the title on superior goal difference.
In the other fixture, Ranchers Bees secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Doma United. Kabiru Salisu starred for the Bees with a brace, while Stephen Pam added the third goal to complete an impressive performance. Mustapha Bashir netted Doma United’s lone goal as a consolation.
With the Super 4 now concluded, the promoted sides will turn their attention towards strengthening their squads ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign.
