Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry says the club wants to win the UEFA Champions League after a ‘difficult’ semi-final victory over Lyon on Wednesday in Lisbon.
A wonderful man of the match performance from the former Arsenal and West Brom man inspired Bayern to a 0-3 win over French side Lyon with Gnabry scoring a brace.
The 25-year-old scored both goals in a testing opening half for the Bavarians after Lyon missed two golden opportunities to take the lead through Memphis Depay and Toko Ekambi whose effort hit the post.
However, 15 minutes later, Gnabry completed his brace in a swift turnaround for Bayern before top scorer, Robert Lewandowski sealed the deal with a third goal two minutes from time.
Speaking moments after the match, the wide forward admitted Bayern were lucky to still be in the game before his goals but are now focused on winning the title.
“We were a bit lucky at the start, Manuel [Neuer] saved well and then they hit the post, ” he told Sky Sport.
“The first couple of minutes we struggled a little bit. My [first] goal came at the right time to give us a bit of confidence.
“But fortunately we took a 2-0 lead into the break before Lewandowski finished the job late on. Now we want to win the competition.”
Following his two-goal heroics against Lyon in the semi-final, Gnabry took his tally for the season to nine goals in eight matches in the competition and became just the second German player to net a brace in UEFA Champions League, UCL semi-final after his teammate, Thomas Müller who achieved similar feat against Barcelona in 2013.
Gnabry would be hoping to help Bayern clinch their first Champions League title since 2013 and sixth overall when they take to the pitch on Sunday against another French side in Paris St Germain, who put on a show against another German team, RB Leipzig, in the first semi-final which they also won 0-3.
Bayern are the tournament’s top scorers this season with 42 goals while PSG boast the meanest defense having conceded just five goals.
