There seems to be no end to the Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi debate, after a disappointing outing against Iceland by the Argentine on Saturday.

Messi missed a penalty as the two-time world champions were held to a 1-1 draw by debutants, Iceland.

After Ronaldo’s heroics against Spain on Friday, when the Real Madrid man scored a hattrick, expectations were high, with many anticipating a response from Messi.

However, it wasn’t meant to be, as the Barcelona legend was well tamed by a very compact and organised Icelandic side.

With the match locked at 1-1, and time running out on Jorge Sampoali’s men, they were handed a lifeline when the referee pointed to the spot, after Maximiliano Meza was fouled in the box.

Messi stepped up to the spot, but watched helplessly as his effort was superbly saved by Iceland goalkeeper, Hannes Halldorsson.

Thereafter, there would be no Messi for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, as he was taken to the cleaners on social media.

Here are some of the best reactions;
