Abubakar, 19, starred for Gent’s B team scoring 21 goals in 27 matches for the Belgian club last season. He has now signed for Vila Nova after the Belgian club decided not to keep him permanently.

Umar Abubakar’s impressive ability to find the back of the net has not gone unnoticed at the national level. The talented forward has already represented Nigeria in both the U-17 and U-20 national teams, showcasing his quality on the continental stage.

“I’m happy to be here and to sign the contract,” the forward said in a video on X. “For me, it’s to score goals and be with the team… it depends on the kind of formation that is played by the coach”.

He added: “I know [Famalicão] is a good team with good players, good management, and they believe in young people, young players… the training center, the football pitch, everything is good”.

Famalicão finished 7th on the Primeira Liga standings last season, and with the addition of Abubakar, they will be hoping they can do one better by clinching a place in Europe in the 2025/26 season.
