Ostapenko upsets World number one to reach Wuhan Open semi-final

French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko beat Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza to reach the semi finals of the Wuhan Open in China on Thursday.

Eight seed Ostapenko beat Muguruza 1-6 6-3 6-2 to extend her winning streak to eight matches.

Muguruza got off to a flying start as Ostapenko was made to commit 15 unforced errors. But the Latvian came from a set down to beat Muguruza for the first time and a world number 1 for the first time.

20 year old Ostapenko, set up a semi-final with world number 37 Ashleigh Barty who beat Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) earlier on Thursday.

In the other semi final match, Greece’s Maria Sakkari, who beat Alize Cornet 7-6 (7-2) 7-5, will play against Caroline Garcia, who defeated Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.
