Zambia striker, Barbra Banda was the shining light for Zambia as they lost 10-3 to Netherlands; while Sweden recorded a comprehensive victory over the reigning World Champions, USA in the opening round of the Olympic women’s football event.

The Copper Queens forward marked her Olympic debut with a hat trick, making her the first female African player to score three goals in a single match at the Olympics.

Meanwhile Vivianne Miedema went one better scoring four of her team’s 10 goals while Lieke Martens got herself a brace.

Another shocking result on the opening day of the women’s football event was the USA losing 3-0 to Sweden in what was a completely dominant performance.

The Swedes were dominant from the start creating good goal scoring opportunities which they failed to take until the 25 minute when Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring off a header from close range.

The World Champions made some changes at halftime but it was the Swedes who doubled their lead and eventually went on to add a third as all efforts to find the back of the net for the USA proved futile.

Olympic women’s football event full-time results.
