Olymics silver medallist Blessing Oborodudu was impressed by the quality of talents churned out at the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival just concluded in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state and has encouraged organisers to do more for the emerging talents, www.aclsports.com reports.
Oborududu, a multiple event champion in Wrestling is a child of the Niger Delta and was in Uyo in an Ambassadorial role to provide mentorship and leadership for the emerging young talents and she was left amazed by the depth of talents available in the region.
“I saw some raw talents that someone could just give them the skill and they will be champions soon. The young ones are good and I saw some heavyweight, they are very good,” Oborududu told NDSF Media.
Niger Delta continue to lead in combat
Nigeria have been a leading nation in Wrestling and other combat sports in Africa and majority of the domineering talents have come from the Niger Delta region.
With the quality of talents on showcase at the Festival, Oborududu believes it is a pointer that the region will continue to take the lead in the sport for many years to come.
“These talents show that we have continuity to be Champions – World, Olympics, African and Commonwealth champions and with this competition, I bet you in the next five to ten years, we will be celebrating World and Olympics champions again in Niger Delta,” Oborodudu confidently aver.
Encouragement for the organisers
One of the key tenets of the Main Organizing Committee of the Niger Delta Sports Festival has always been to keep grooming the exceptional talents discovered at this competition.
For Oborududu, it is very key to nurture the young athletes unearthed at this Festival is through continuous competition and exposure.
“I the sponsors have done an incredible job of bringing out these young ones so I encourage them to do more, for it not to end in the competitions alone, after competitions, pick out the scouted athletes, work on them, give them some camping period, if they can provide funds let them go to international competitions.
“That will keep them busy and when we come back to this festival next time again, you will see better swimmers, better wrestlers and better athletes in all aspect because what sports men and women need is more competitions. The more you compete, the more you have confidence to wrestle, run and swim,” added the reigning African champion.
