Bayelsa Queens have appointed Wemimo Matthew as their new head coach on a two-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 NWFL Premiership season, www.aclsports.com reports.
Matthew replaces Whyte Ogbonda, who recently parted ways with the Prosperity Girls after a successful two-year spell. Ogbonda led Bayelsa Queens to the 2024/25 NWFL Premiership title, the final of the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers and a second-place finish in the 2025/26 campaign.
She joins Bayelsa Queens from Remo Stars Ladies and will be accompanied by members of her backroom staff. Matthew spent the past three seasons with the Ikenne-based club after being appointed head coach in October 2023.
During her tenure, she guided the Sky Blue Ladies through a period of steady progress in the NWFL Premiership. One of the highlights of her time at the club was leading the side to their first-ever NWFL Super Six qualification, a historic achievement for the club.
Prior to joining Remo Stars Ladies, Matthew had coaching spells with Sunshine Queens and Edo Queens. She has also served within Nigeria’s women’s national team set-up as an assistant coach with both the Super Falcons and the Falconets. A holder of CAF coaching qualifications, Matthew has further enhanced her credentials through participation in CAF coaching development programmes.
Matthew now takes charge of Bayelsa Queens, one of the most successful clubs in Nigerian women’s football. The Prosperity Girls are six-time league champions and finished runners-up in the 2025/26 campaign after winning the title the previous season.
She will be tasked with leading the Prosperity Girls’ challenge for honours in the 2026/27 season as they seek a return to the summit of the NWFL and a place back on the continental stage.
