Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma hailed his players for their display after a 1-0 win over Katsina United in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 3 game on Wednesday, describing it as their best game of the season, reports www.aclsports.com

Forward Ossy Martins scored the game’s only goal in the tenth minute from the penalty spot as United claimed all three points in the rescheduled Match Day 3 game decided at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

But for the heroics of Katsina United goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Rivers United could have indeed recorded a wider score margin, something Eguma acknowledged after the game.

“I agree (that this is one of our best performances of the season),” Eguma told www.aclsports.com Chief Football Writer Fisayo Dairo after the game.

“The players did well today. They did very well. Even though we scored only one goal, we should have scored more goals. We had so many chances, about four in the first half, second half we got about three chances,” continued Eguma.

“I think we have to take it from here. We have to play above our capacity to ensure that we climb the log because the league is still open and our target now is to make sure that we get to the last six and from there we will take it up.”

Rivers United welcomed back Kunle Odunlami after a three-game suspension for Wednesday’s game. The centre back played in a defensive midfield role for Eguma’s side and his coach was impressed on how he carried out his task.

“I decided to play him there because I knew he could play it. He worked hard and played well and I commended his efforts. He never disappointed me because he has a lot of experience and he’s a big plus to the team.

“When I saw the kind of opponents we are facing and according to our game plan, we have to neutralise their midfield and Odunlami was the one suited to that job and he did it perfectly well today,” added Eguma.

Wednesday’s win lifts Rivers United to third spot on the NPFL 2018/19 Group A log.
