Management of Nigeria’s second tier league, the Nigerian National League (NNL) will conduct fresh draws ahead of next week’s commencement of the 2019 season on Friday in Abuja, reports www.aclsports.com
The new development becomes imperative after the Football Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) which met at the weekend recommended that the upcoming NNL season should take an eight-group shape with four teams expected to gain promotion to the elite division next season.
The committee’s recommendation came on the heels of the draws for a four-group championship which was conducted last week in Abuja.
It was reported that the format and shape of the draws were seriously contested by participating clubs who reluctantly accepted the four groups of ten.
The new draws ceremony has been fixed for 6pm on Friday at NERA Hotels Abuja with at least 40 teams, including Kada City (who just traded their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) spot with Delta Force) replacing Force in the draws.
The Nigeria Football Federation have instructed that the new NNL season must start next Wednesday (April 10, 2019) with a tentative conclusion date of first week in July.
With the new eight groups format, it remains very likely that a season-ending Super 8 tournament comprising of all group leaders will be required to determine the teams to be promoted to the NPFL.
